FEATURED STUDENT ARTIST
FEATURED ELEMENTARY STAFF ARTIST

Charlotte D., 4th Grade
Meet Charlotte D – KCAA’s first featured Elementary Artist of the Month! Charlotte has been a KCAA student since she started here as a kindergartner. Charlotte’s goal as an artist is to help people understand things through her art. Charlotte’s big dreams include being a ballerina and an artist who does portraits. Charlotte has I have two cats and one dog. Charlotte says, “One of the cats is cranky, the other cat is a little crazy and the dog is really sweet.”
In addition to setting goals in art, Charlotte wishes she could speak Spanish fluently and is most proud of herself when she tries new things. In her free time she stated, “Sometimes I dance with a ribbon, other times I sit and draw and paint, and once I made two potholders.” Charlotte’s favorite artist is currently Georgia O’Keefe and her favorite things about school are art and drama because, “they move me.” If Charlotte could travel anywhere it would be to Hogwarts! Charlotte says, “If I could go anywhere, I would go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry because I love Harry Potter books and at Hogwarts I’d love to try sweets from Honeydukes and get some tricks from Zonko’s.” Thanks to Charlotte for being our featured artist this month. We look forward to seeing many exciting things from her this year!

What are your artistic goals?
To develop confidence in my art and be willing to take risks. For example, choosing to write a poem for a work assignment or taking my guitar to add a song to a group setting. I need to risk to bring arts into my everyday world. I love doodling and am a visual person in general. I’ve never really “felt” like an artist but done many “artistic” things-singing and playing guitar on stage, reading poetry in front of an audience, etc. Doesn’t that make me an artist? Doesn’t that make everyone an artist?
What do you dream of being when you grow up?
In my minds’ eye I’m 65, surrounded by orphans or 3rd world students, and we are in a mostly dirt school compound we putting on a play, or singing a song, or having a slam poetry session! Will I be grown up by then?
Family and Home
Do you have any brothers, sisters, pets or other siblings?
I am the middle of three boys. Now as a dad and husband I am blessed by my wife Jennifer and our 6 kids. We have 2 children “biologically” 2 adopted and currently 2 foster children. Sometimes fish visit as pets but usually we send them to the great ocean beyond the sun pretty quickly.
Do you speak any other languages? If not, what language do you wish you spoke?
I wish I could speak more Spanish and Hebrew. I speak a little of both. To be multi- or bilingual is such a gift. Perhaps with more travel I could solidify both?
Getting to know you...
What are you are most proud of?
My family. I love that we’ve opened our hearts to adopt and foster and I love my wife and kids. They are my pride and joy.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
At 48 and a father of 6 I don’t have much free time. Getting a chance to walk in the park with my kids is great. We ski some, hike some, and swim some. Lately we’ve had badminton competitions in the back yard-awesome! Honestly I just like to look at the sky. I love nature and the beauty of creation. Any day outside is a gift.
KCAA Elementary Program uses the DPS Scope and Sequence and foundational curriculums to design comprehensive project based units. At KCAA we align learning to the Common Core State Standards and Colorado Academic Standards using Arts Integration and 21st Century Skills as the method for delivering high quality, rigorous instruction.
In addition to the core academics of reading, writing, math, science and social studies KCAA elementary students are also offered visual arts, dance, drama, instrumental and vocal music and technical literacy throughout the year.
KCAA is preparing students for college and career in a global economy. We know that access to technology is key to preparing students for diverse learning and working environments and all KCAA students benefit from 1:1 tech device access.
